Shutting down spas is not about criminal gangs or sex trafficking. It’s not about making things safer for women. It’s about controlling what adults can consensually do in private. It’s absolutely puritanical bullshit.

The article mentions 10 spas on EBC but there's got to be closer to 20 today, and way more if you include the surrounding streets


Damn, if that's the case and a similar 'clean up' is done now then it could be years before things get back to normal

On the other hand, the number of spas in the area seem to have exploded over the last few years, so I wouldn't exactly call the current situation 'normal'

If the city had limited the amount of licenses in the first place, it wouldn’t have become such an epidemic to attract attention from the general public
Also as most of these places are in industrial condo units, use may be controlled by the condo corp at least to limit the amount of places that can open

I have not read the complete thread so I apologize if my comments repeat what other may have written. What's happening in the EBC corridor and I believe the City of Vaughan has nothing to do with any action being taken against organized crime or infractions of the criminal code of Canada. It is a bylaw enforcement action. The City of Richmond Hill is 100% responsible for the issue. Land Lords were allowed to rent to what might be considered to fringe businesses not for weeks or months but years. These business advertise their services and forums like this one activity discuss services offered. The bylaw the City has sighted has been in place longer than the vast majority of the spas. There is no excuse the City can raise for not enforcing years ago. The previous crack down in this area was a police action targeting criminal activity. The courts ruled against the action. This allowed the reestablishment of the area.

It is without doubt stupidity to believe closing these spas will do anything but drive activity underground increasing danger to the woman that work these jobs. If anyone thinks the spas drive business away try to find parking in the evening at any of the nearby restaurants in the evening western or asian.

If the city wants these businesses to relocate than compensate them to do so. If the city thinks they are saving our souls sorry too late and not their elected mandate.

Lol! Like the city cares. They are acting on complaints. Complaints are votes. Contrary to popular belief the amount of hobbyist pale in comparison to the amount that don't partake. As with most things, majority wins.

Can you really blame the city for licensing a RMT or holistic centre and the owner turns it into a brothel?

due to my particular interests with holistic spas, I have a regular search using "cim " as a search term. Based on recent results (and yes this is anecdotal as HELL), non-RH spas are pre-emptively cleaning out their advertising of sex specific terms. To which I say BOOOOOOO...

well they're operating like they have a body rub license. TBH, I won't be surprised if it's the shops who owns a body rub license who are complaining about these spas. The body rub places are so slow right now, I walked into two of them last week after a work meeting with a client since I had some free time and it was a stressful day. Almost all of the girls except for one were available. Having said that, the talent at body rub spas have really gone downhill and no, I didn't even bother to stay after the meet and greet.

For the room fee + the extra fee, the spas at EBC offers a way better value than any of the body rub places.

With the possibility of some of these places going down would the supply demand balance itself and the surviving ones get busier? And with less options are we going to see rates go up again until they saturate again.

This is true. Although today, alot of spas appear to be busier than usual. I called a few of my regular spots and they are busy.

Then why did the city make them pay for a license in the first place? I can see a lawsuit against the city on that screwup (to refund the cost of license, lease and lease fitup costs). Even if it buys them more time while it plays out in court.

Interesting. I talked to one of my current fav MPAs today and she said yesterday was not busy. And another fav complained about how slow that spa was so she was looking at other places. And I am getting messages from MPAs to come visit because how slow it is during part of the day.

I can understand the hesitation. Especially the requirements on STD testing if they have to go to the family doctor. Or, if they are on a student visa and not a work visa. I doubt there is a database lookup on attendants name like there is for the spa though so some privacy should still be there.

It's more the stigma of being known body rub attendant .

They fear that some1 will find out one day. I don't think the license is publicly posted, but with a search and maybe a bit of legal help can be easily obtained.
