funding and cost to train in accupuncture

hi guys, Ihave started to look intoin training inaccupuncture.....part time which takes about 6 years, I understand.
I read in one thread on HPthat training costs about £6000 per year!? does anyone know if that applies to most training establishments?
also has anyone been successful in obtaining grants or funding to train in accupuncture. I would be grateful for your responses

Hi there

I've looked into acupuncture training as well, and it seems that most of the part time courses are private institutions hence the very hefty fees! It seems one of the best routes to take is by studying full time for3 years with the University of Westminister. This degree is recognised by the NHS too which is a bonus, and the fees are the same as most undergraduate courses.

Im studying at westminster...i would recommend if you could to do it full-time so you could get a grant for the fees (i did)
The cost is £3000, like every other undergraduate course. If you do it partime you pay according to the module, i think is about £300 for a normal module and £450 for a clinic one, but double check on that. For the grant you can apply to your local LEA; you stand a much better chance if you dont have a previous degree and if you have kids. For partimers unluckily there isnt much support im aware of. I heard that Reading is very good as well and if im not wrong it is part of kingston university so u might get financial help as well. well i do have a degree that i got about 10 years ago. i do have a child who is two and am on income support as a lone parent (not the best situation, but it could with funding perhaps) so part-time is really the only option for me. I am looking at Brighton university (course is based in east grinstead).How many modules are there in the degree and how many of them are clinical? Also do you know if I need a biology A'level too?

8 modules every year...im only on my first year and i think that just one of them is clinical but is double, it runs both semesters...part time people are doing between 2 and 3 module per semester...

a lady on my course, with 3 kids, started off full time and then switched to part time ...i know she got funding for sure...but i dont know if she had a previous degree...im sure you are going to get financial help...

Please do look at the actual courses themselves!!

Colleges vary enormously in what they actually accomplish. For example East Grinstead teaches an esoteric style of acupuncture called Stems and Branches. Many of the graduates I've met have qualified confused and under-prepared and have needed to do extra post-grad training just to get started. (I've also met gradutes from there who have been wonderful practitioners from the off as well!)

Westminster graduates practice TCM style mostly, which is great but like anything has its limitations. One of the most common complaints I've heard from TCM practitioners is that they can find acupuncture is only suitable for certain issues, and that for further progress patients need to take herbs. This is a "limitation" that doesn't tend to be experienced so much by Integrated practitioners out of Reading, for example.

I know these are generalisations, but the style of acupuncture is very valuable, and tends to also be something that you can't really appreciate until after the training! Look into the different styles and go with what feels right to you. This will for the most part determine which college you attend.
