Hi guys,
firstly, sorry my English I am 35 and now I have started learning massage in college. I love it but I am afraid that I am a bit too old to start new occupation. When did you start? What do think about my concern?

Hi Andrew

You are fairly young. It is never to late to start doing something you love. Age does not count. I had a woman who taught me who was in her late 60's. Go for it and enjoy it.

Two years ago at the age of 57 I qualified as a massage therapist and I wasn't the oldist in the class! I am now planning on setting up a new business having added reflexology and stress management to my skills - have not considered that I am too old and in fact feel that more mature clients might prefer more mature therapist.
What do others think?

It's never too late! I'm just about to turn 50 and my business is fairly new. You have a good 30 years of working life ahead of you! Go for it!

In my experience, women are more likely to relax with an older male therapist - somehow they are "safer" because the first flush of testosterone has passed!

On the ISRM course I did a couple of years ago I was 31 and I would say this was the average. My class ranged from 18 to late 40s. Maybe a bit older but I don't want to speculate just in case one of my former classmates are reading this.

I'm 39 and have just qualified. I'm employed by a football club and see private clients. It is such a buzz. I think us more mature therapists have a lot to offer.

I've just started a swedish massage course at collage and i,m 37. My trade is a carpenter but I,ve had enough the way things are at the moment and I think Ive got more to offer other people as a person as I just love meeting new people. I think its the best thing I,ve done in the last few years and I love it to. Keep on with the course and I think you will love it.

I was 34 when I went to college to study holistic therapies, although I have full time job and my therapies were part time I embraced it all and found that I was more focused on learning it all. Few years down the line I am loving my therapies with a passion and so glad to have found something right for me.

I was 41 when I began my massage training (in 1998). Possibly it may be a bit harder to go back to learning the 'theory' involved in A&P after being out of the classroom for so long, but I have not found that my age has deterred clients from coming to me: in fact I have the impression that some of my clients are more comfortable with a relatively mature therapist.

Thanks for all your answers. That really gives me more self-confidence.
In my life I was a driver, a soldier, an engineer etc. I never was completely pleased about what I was doing. Now, I feel that massage is something what I can do

I think it's impossible to know what you want to do with your life when you're younger. You simply don't know what there is out there to do and it takes trial and error to find your calling. I started my training when I was 31 (I think) and I've just turned 34. I feel at home doing my treatments so I'm happy that I have now found what I want to do and am pleased that I still have years and years left to do it.

So, in short, no, I don't think 35 is anywhere near too old.

I was 33 when I started my swedish massage course. Well it changed my life and now know what my life purpose is after being a secretary for 17 years! I am now 36 and still learning !
