OKLAHOMA CITY (KSWO) - The Oklahoma Senate passed a Bill clarifying the Massage Therapy Practice Act.
Senate Bill 644, authored by Kristen Thompson (R-Edmond), seeks to clarify that the Massage Therapy Practice Act does not keep municipalities from regulating or enforcing ordinances directed at massage therapy companies.
Thompson said this measure follows concerns from residents and local leaders about some massage therapy operations being fronts for trafficking.
โThis is about protecting our communities and cracking down on the exploitation happening behind the front doors of certain so-called โmassage parlors,โโ Thompson said. โHuman trafficking is real. Itโs happening in plain sight. And this bill gives cities and counties the legal tools they need to fight it head-on.โ
The bill now heads to the Oklahoma House of Representatives for discussion after being passed by the Senate through a 43 to 3 vote.
