Why has Japan introduced 'Silver week'?

Japan has not "introduced" Silver Week. This exists this year because holidays are in good position.

23rd Wednesday is a holiday. And 21st Monday is a holiday. Tuesday became a holiday because it was between 2 holidays.

And we have Saturday and Sunday on 19th and 20th.

It is just sort of artificial mas-media created wording, and nobody cares actually. No reason except stupid business intention.

"Well here in autumn, in September to be exact, there is another series of holidays back to back, that has been recently referred to as “SILVER WEEKâ€Â. These three holidays are (9/21) “Keiro no Hi†or “Respect for the Aged Dayâ€Â, (9/22) “Kokumin on Kyujitsu†or “Citizen’s Rest Day†which is basically a bridge holiday between the 21st and 23rd, and (9/23) “Shubun no Hi†or “Autumn Equinoxâ€Â. You can have anywhere from a 3 day holiday on up to 9 days by taking a couple of days off and combining them with the weekends. This year these holidays start on a Monday, so we get 5 days off counting Saturday and Sunday. NICE!" The next 5 days in a row won't be until 2015 because of where the weekend falls.
