BCCC to launch therapeutic massage program​

Beaufort County Community College (Beaufort CCC) will introduce a new therapeutic massage diploma program in fall 2025, expanding its healthcare and wellness offerings to meet growing regional demand, noted an announcement from the school. The college will also transition its esthetics technology certificate program back into the curriculum division to better serve students pursuing careers in skincare and wellness. Both programs are currently pending review by the State Board of Community Colleges.

The therapeutic massage diploma will prepare students to enter the growing field through a 39-credit hour, one-year course of study. Students will gain hands-on experience in therapeutic techniques, anatomy, physiology and client care. Graduates will be eligible to take the North Carolina Board of Massage and Bodywork Licensing Exam.

“This program will help our students work locally in a healthcare career that may align better with their goals than our current offerings,” said Dr. Lisa Hill, vice president of academic affairs. “It offers a meaningful career path for students while addressing the wellness needs of our aging population.”

According to the Labor Market Index, massage therapy is projected to grow by 1.3 percent annually. Over the past three years, interest in nursing programs at Beaufort CCC has increased by 23 percent, but limited admissions have highlighted the need for alternative pathways in healthcare. The new diploma provides a viable option for students seeking a rewarding, in-demand profession.

The program responds to demographic shifts in the region, where a large and growing retiree population has increased demand for complementary healthcare services. Graduates will be prepared to work in settings such as chiropractic offices, rehabilitation centers, spas and independent practices.

Courses will be delivered face-to-face, ensuring students receive direct training from qualified instructors and develop the professional skills necessary for success, noted the announcement.

In addition to launching the massage therapy program, Beaufort CCC will return its esthetics technology certificate – only 16 credit hours – to the curriculum division under the cosmetology program. Last offered for credit more than a decade ago, the certificate has recently gained traction through continuing education, with strong enrollment demand and waitlists.

“This will give our cosmetology students a chance to expand into skincare and self-care to build a more resilient and dynamic career,” said Hill. “The field appeals to a broad range of individuals, including those already working in the beauty industry who are looking to diversify their skills.”

Driven by social media trends and heightened skincare awareness, esthetics has emerged as a dynamic and creative career path. With just 600 hours of training required, students can complete the program in about 10 months and pursue careers in salons, spas, dermatology clinics, or small business ownership, stated the announcement.

Both programs are covered under the Beaufort Promise Scholarship, which pays tuition and fees for qualifying residents of Beaufort, Hyde, Tyrrell and Washington counties. While textbooks are not covered, students can apply for other private scholarships to assist with those costs.
